Blog Entry #4

There are several questions and issues to consider when designing a user interface.

What will be the goal of this user interface?

Who is the desired or target audience of this user interface?

Is the user interface easy to use (not complex or complicated in structure)?

Will its organizational structure be readily apparent to the average/desired user?

Will the navigation options between pages be easy to manage?

Is it accessible to users whose primary language is not the same as the one used in the user interface?

Is it easily translatable to other languages?

Would these be verbatim translations or interpretations of the original language of the user interface?

If translated, will certain nuances be lost due to language limitations or differences?

Will there be verbal metaphors, virtual interface metaphors, and/or composite metaphors to further create a more fully realized translation (or interpretation)?

Will cultural considerations be taken into account (similarly to the translation considerations)?

Will the creator conduct or study research to make better informed decisions regarding cross-cultural understandings and perceptions of user interfaces?

Will the intersection of language and culture be considered in language and other visual elements?

Has the user interface creator considered personal biases and their possible influences and effect on their creation?

Has the creator studied the interface preferences of a variety of populations?

Are visual elements (colors, icons, images, typography, layouts, etc.) readily apparent/easy to understand for hopeful users?

Have the visual/hearing limited community been considered in any and all aspects of the user interface design listed in the previous questions?

Regarding audiovisual elements: Will the website allow electronic reading software programs read any given text on the website for those with vision issues? Will captions and transcriptions be available for those with hearing issues?

Will the user interface have “universal design” in mind?

Considering these questions and then some is essential expanding one’s audience by creating an interface that can be used and understood by many than just a select few. It brings others not normally considered into the conversation at hand, and therefore brings fresh perspectives to the table. Being mindful of accessibility and cultural differences is one step closer creating content that is truly accessible for all.
